2021 PHA Convention in Review

Last May 25 – 28, 2021, the Philippine Heart Association led by President DR. ORLANDO BUGARIN  held its virtual 51st Annual Convention and Scientific Meeting with the theme: NEXT LEVEL STRATEGIES.  The over-all Chair of the convention was DR. JUDE ERRIC L. CINCO and the Chair of the Scientific Committee was DR. RONALD CUYCO.   

The activities on the pre-convention held last May 25 were lectures on sports cardiology with advocacy hour, cardiac imaging heart failure journey and echocardiography (PHA-PSE-ASE precon).  Day 1 started with the  DR. HOMOBONO B. CALLEJA PROFESSORIAL LECTURE byPROF. JONATHAN LINDNER (Contrast and Bubbles in Echocardiography),  DR. RAMON F. ABARQUEZ JR. MEMORIAL LECTURE by DR. ESPERANZA I. CABRAL (Compassion and Clinical Outcomes)  and the Research Paper Contest for the DR. FRANCISCO F. TANGCO YOUNG INVESTIGATOR’S AWARD.  This was followed by simultaneous sessions on ECG, cardiovascular (CV) imaging, echocardiography and CV oncology and later followed by simultaneous sessions on cardiopulmonary resuscitation, coronary artery disease, CV anesthesia and critical and the debate of the Cardiology Fellows.

During the Joint PHA/ACC Session on Day 2, the speakers were DR. RAUL L. LAPITAN (New Hippocratic Oath) and DR. DIPTI ITCHHAPORIA  from the US (Women and Heart Disease: Emerging Risk Factors).  PROFESSOR SAURABAH KUMAR from Australia delivered a talk on Sudden Cardiac Death in the DR. RAMIRO DE GUIA MEMORIAL LECTURE.  The plenary lecture featured CPR Ready Philippines: A PHA Success Story.  In the afternoon of Day 2, there were simultaneous sessions on cardiovascular oncology, women’s cardiovascular health, cardiac catheterization and interventions and heart failure.  During the  Annual Business Meeting presided by DR. BUGARIN, he reported on the various activities for the past year.  PHA Treasurer DR. CUYCO reported on the unexpected increased revenue of the association mostly from the regular on-line webinars.  The PSPC family was overjoyed when the results of the election was announced, with PSPC Past President DR. AURORA S. GAMPONIA being elected as one of the new Member of the PHA Board.

Day 3 started with the Joint PHA-ESC Session with DR. GILBERT C. VILELA  (Heart Failure Post AMI: Can We Stop Adding Insult to Injury?) and PROFESSOR STEPHAN ACHENBACH from Germany (What CT Can Teach About Prevention) as speakers.  DR. NORBERT LINGLING D. UY delivered the DR. ADOLFO B. BELLOSOSILLO PROFESSORIAL LECTURE (Quality of Medical Education in this Time of Pandemic). Lectures on the  simultaneous sessions followed during the rest of the day: cardiac rehabilitation, preventive cardiology, electrophysiologic and cardiac pacing and stroke and peripheral vascular disease; cardiomyopathy, congenital heart disease, pharmacotherapy and cardiovascular nursing; and cardiovascular surgery, echocardiography, hypertension, and RF, RHD, IE and Kawasaki Disease.

DR. JOEL T. HARDIN from USA, an Honorary Member of PSPC, joined Dr. Casas and Dr. Del Rosario in the session on congenital heart disease and talked on “Residua and Sequella of Corrected CHD”.
